Travellers catching the [Moreton Bay] Bug this Christmas

23 December 2024: As Brisbane’s Northern Beaches come alive this summer, Moreton Bay’s renowned seafood suppliers are preparing for a festive rush. At the heart of the action, Morgan’s Seafood in Scarborough is gearing up for its busiest day of the year on Christmas Eve, with crowds flocking to snap up mountains of fresh prawns, succulent Moreton Bay bugs, and premium barramundi – staples of the quintessential Aussie Christmas feast.

“Seafood is the centerpiece of Christmas for so many Queensland families,” said Roan Van Graan of Morgan’s Seafood. “We’re thrilled to be part of this tradition, supplying the freshest catches straight from Moreton Bay. This year, we’re expecting record demand as locals embrace the classic Aussie seafood feast.”

The excitement doesn’t stop at seafood. The broader Moreton Bay region is seeing a surge in tourism, with travelers taking advantage of the area’s close proximity to Brisbane and its array of attractions. From the vibrant waterfront to tranquil islands, Moreton Bay has something for everyone, making it the perfect choice for spontaneous holiday plans.

Luke Edwards, Acting CEO of Visit Moreton Bay, confirmed the trend, highlighting the region’s appeal for spontaneous and short-term travel plans.

“The Moreton Bay region continues to cement its reputation as Brisbane’s playground. With many travellers making last-minute decisions based on the weather, the region offers a convenient and accessible destination for visitors from Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast, Ipswich, and Toowoomba,” said Edwards.

Tourism operators across the region are optimistic about a strong summer season, driven by the area’s combination of fresh seafood, accessible beaches, islands, and family-friendly activities.

“Accommodation, transport and experience providers across the region are optimistic about the summer season ahead. The region has a lot to offer and more people are turning to Moreton Bay as a destination by discovering the plethora of activities on offer.

“We also know many people travel here to visit friends and family over the Christmas period and we encourage those living in Moreton Bay to play tour guide to their friends and family this summer,” added Edwards.
