11 September 2024: Kayo Stadium in the Moreton Bay region has been transformed to host the season opener of the Australian Supercross after a five year hiatus in Queensland. Around 6,000 tonnes of dirt has been delivered to the venue, and transformed into race tracks, as it prepares to host two sell out crowds on Saturday and Sunday with 40 percent of attendees travelling from out of the region to attend.
Supercross fans are revved up for the return of a legend with two-time SX World Champion Chad Reed serving as the event’s ambassador. His son, Tate Reed, is set to compete for a podium spot in the 85cc class on Saturday, named in honour of his father. The Reed family will descend on the stadium fresh from a break exploring the region where they have taken to the water around Bribie Island before getting an aerial view of Bribie’s lagoons and national parks aboard an exhilarating chopper ride – before digging into to a seafood feast at Sandstone Point Hotel.
“This weekend, the Moreton Bay region welcomes around 20,000 attendees to open the season in Redcliffe. Around 8,000 of these spectators are coming from outside the region in addition to the riders and their families. Whilst here, we encourage them to follow the Reed family’s example by taking time out to explore our waterways, sandy beaches, national parks and enjoy some fresh seafood,” said Tash Wheeler, CEO of Visit Moreton Bay.
“It’s incredible to see Kayo Stadium transformed into dirt tracks where international stars and homegrown heroes will stun crowds. It’s a great day out for families and adventure seekers alike.
“We thank and congratulate the City of Moreton Bay for their continued commitment and vision of bringing events to the region which in turn provide a positive boost for local tourism businesses,” added Tash.
Speaking about his role as the event’s ambassador, Chad Reed said it was a highlight to return to Australia to open the season in Redcliffe, where his son Tate will make his Queensland debut.
“This weekend’s event is really significant for our family as we have returned to Australia from the US for Tate’s first race in Queensland at the season opener at Kayo Stadium. While here, we’ve enjoyed making new memories with an epic day out yesterday exploring Bribie Island by boat, jet ski, and helicopter. It’s great to be back on home soil with the family and to be a mentor and ambassador for Australian Supercross,” said Chad.
During the two days, defending champion Dean Wilson will face off against international competitors, including Joey Savatgy and Aaron Tanti, delivering high-octane action on the track. Australian stars Matt Moss and Luke Clout will represent local talent, vying for glory on home soil.
