4 April 2024: The Moreton Bay region, just up the road from Brisbane, is emerging as one of Queensland’s strongest growing tourism destinations with latest data revealing the region welcomed 3.9 million visitors in 2024 and recorded a staggering 5.2 million visitor nights.
While total visitor numbers experienced a modest decline compared to 2023, new data reveals that those who do visit are staying longer and exploring more of what the region has to offer.
Overnight visitor numbers surged by 15.5% year-on-year, and visitor nights rose by an impressive 37.6%, translating to 1.4 million additional nights spent in the region by tourists in 2024.
“This growth in overnight stays is a strong indicator that people aren’t just coming to Moreton Bay for the day – they’re choosing to immerse themselves in the experiences our region offers,” said Luke Edwards, CEO of Visit Moreton Bay.
“We’ve seen a clear shift in visitor behaviour, and that tells us Moreton Bay is no longer just a hidden gem — it’s becoming a destination in its own right.”
One of the key drivers of this uplift has been a sharp increase in international tourism, with international visitor nights almost doubling over the past year.
“Visit Moreton Bay, together with our industry and partners, has been doubling down on encouraging visitors to stay and play in the region. The fruits of that labour are now showing up in the latest visitor statistics, which is a testament to the vision of the City of Moreton Bay Council and the evolution of our local industry and strong partnerships with Brisbane Airport and the Brisbane Economic Development Agency.
“It’s fantastic to see this kind of momentum, and it reflects the ongoing work our tourism operators, local government, and community are doing to create world-class experiences.”
“We’re building a destination that’s authentic, diverse, and welcoming — and people are responding to that,” Edwards added.
This momentum will be further fueled with the launch of Visit Moreton Bay’s marquee destination campaign, Just Up the Road, launching on 7 April. Designed to convert awareness into overnight stays, the campaign is set to showcase the very best of the region’s experiences, attractions, and local stories to both Brisbane-based and interstate audiences.
